Quick answer

The essentials at a glance

The right Canadian college depends on your program, budget and city. Big Toronto-area colleges such as Humber, Seneca and George Brown offer the most choice. Colleges in smaller Ontario and western cities cost less to live near.

Most colleges ask for IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5 for diplomas and 6.5 with no band below 6.0 for postgraduate certificates. Check that your program is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit before you apply.

Here is what you will find, in order:

  • An at-a-glance table of 34 colleges: city, what each is known for and the IELTS score it asks for.
  • Four groups by region: the big Toronto-area colleges, other southern Ontario colleges, lower-cost northern Ontario colleges, and colleges outside Ontario. Each card links to our detailed guide or the college’s official website.
  • College or university, and the work permit rules that apply to college programs.

Should You Choose a College or a University in Canada?

Choose a college for a shorter, job-focused diploma or postgraduate certificate. Choose a university for a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD degree.

  • Length: certificates take about one year, diplomas two years and advanced diplomas three years. Postgraduate certificates usually take one year.
  • English: most colleges ask for IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5 for diplomas, and 6.5 with no band below 6.0 for postgraduate certificates.
  • Cost: college tuition is usually lower, and shorter programs mean fewer months of living costs.
  • Transfer: some college credits transfer to universities, especially in British Columbia.

Compare options in our guide to the best universities in Canada for Nepali students.

Can You Get a Post-Graduation Work Permit After a Canadian College?

Yes, if your college and program are eligible and you meet the language and field of study rules. Check these before you accept an offer:

  • Field of study: if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024, a college program must be in an eligible field of study.
  • Language: college graduates need Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in all four skills when they apply for the PGWP.
  • Partner campuses: some Ontario colleges run programs through private partner colleges, mostly in Toronto and Brampton. If you start one of these curriculum licensing programs on or after 1 September 2024, it is not eligible for a PGWP.
  • Length: a program of 8 months to under 2 years can give a PGWP up to the length of the program. A program of 2 years or more can give a PGWP of up to 3 years.

See the full Canada student visa requirements.

What Do Nepali Students Need to Get Into a Canadian College?

You need +2 (NEB) or a bachelor’s degree, depending on the program, an English test score and, for the visa, a Letter of Acceptance, a PAL/TAL and proof of funds.

Not sure how your NEB grades compare? Convert your NEB GPA to a percentage with our NEB GPA calculator.

  • For a diploma or advanced diploma: +2 (NEB) with the subjects your program needs, such as mathematics for business, IT and engineering technology.
  • For a postgraduate certificate: a bachelor’s degree or college diploma. A three-year bachelor’s degree from Nepal is usually accepted, but check each program page.
  • English: IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo. See minimum IELTS and PTE scores for Canada.
  • Documents: academic transcripts and certificates, your passport and, for some programs, a Statement of Purpose or resume.
  • For the study permit: first-year tuition plus CAD 23,448 for living costs. See the application process.

How Much Does a Canadian College Cost, and When Can You Start?

College tuition depends on the college, program and city, and is usually lower than university tuition. Living costs are highest in Toronto and Vancouver and lower in smaller cities. See the full cost to study in Canada and our scholarships guide.

Most colleges take new students in September and January, and many programs also start in May. See our guide to Canadian intakes.

When I first came to Canada, I was nervous about fitting in and managing costs. Starting at a college gave me smaller classes, approachable professors, and the chance to work part-time. It made my transition smoother than I ever imagined.
