About Douglas College

Every fall, a fresh wave of Nepali students lands in Metro Vancouver and finds their way to a campus one block from the SkyTrain in New Westminster. That’s Douglas College (official site) – a public college chartered in 1970 that has grown into one of British Columbia’s largest degree-granting colleges, with close to 25,000 students and partners across PACWEST, CCAA and NWAACC athletics conferences.

What draws international students in particular is Douglas’s role as a bridge: associate degrees and university-transfer credits that ladder directly into BC’s research universities, alongside applied diplomas and bachelor’s programs built for the local job market. For a Nepali student weighing cost, credit transfer and a realistic path to post-graduation work, it’s a practical middle ground between a large university and a career college.

Career Support, Co-op and Part-Time Work

Douglas College’s Career Centre runs one-on-one coaching with professional career advisors, job-search workshops and an online job board (Career Hub) open to current students. Many business, computing and applied programs also offer optional co-operative education placements, alternating semesters of study with paid, full-time work terms that build Canadian work experience before graduation.

International students on a valid study permit can generally work part-time off campus while classes are in session and full-time during scheduled breaks, under the same federal rules that apply across Canadian DLIs – the Career Centre and International Student Services offices can confirm current hour limits and help with resume and job-search prep specific to the Metro Vancouver market.
