Quick answer

The essentials at a glance

You need a place at an approved Canadian school and proof that you can pay for it. In practice, that means a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution and, for most programs, a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL).

You must also show funds for your first-year tuition plus CAD 23,448 for living costs. Add a valid passport, a medical exam and a clear study plan. Since the Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, every Nepali student applies through the same regular process.

Key takeaways

Main points from this page

  • SDS closed on 8 November 2024, so all Nepali students apply through the regular study permit process.
  • Show first-year tuition plus CAD 23,448 for living costs (one person, outside Quebec, from 1 September 2026).
  • Master's and PhD students at public DLIs no longer need a PAL/TAL from 1 January 2026.
  • The study permit fee is CAD 150, plus CAD 85 for biometrics.
  • You can work up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic terms.

Canada is one of the most popular destinations for Nepali students, but getting admitted to a university or college is only half the journey. To actually begin your studies, you must secure a Canadian study permit by meeting all the official conditions set by IRCC. These conditions cover everything from your academic requirement for Canada student visa, your IELTS band scores, and your financial requirements for student visa Canada, to additional rules such as medical checks, police clearance, and whether dependents can accompany you.

Understanding these student visa requirements for Canada from Nepal in advance will save you time, money, and stress. Many refusals happen not because students are unqualified, but because of missing or weak documentation, unclear financial proof, or overlooked rules like the PAL/TAL attestation.

This page explains the Canada study visa requirements in a clear, step-by-step format designed for Nepali students. We focus on the essentials and point you to Goreto counsellors whenever expert help is needed to strengthen your file.

The Essentials Before Applying to Canada

These are the three things every student needs to get started. Our counsellors at Goreto can help you prepare them the right way.

Academic Requirement

Most colleges and universities in Canada expect at least 60% in +2 (for undergraduate) or a bachelor’s degree (for postgraduate). Programs may set higher cut-offs depending on demand

Language Test

Your college or university sets the IELTS or PTE score. IRCC has had no fixed score since the Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024. Book your test early.

Financial Proof

Show your first-year tuition plus at least CAD 23,448 for living costs (outside Quebec, from 1 September 2026). Our team helps you present it in CAD and NPR.

What Changed in Canada’s Student Visa Rules?

There is now one study permit route for every Nepali student. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) closed on 8 November 2024. Since then, IRCC has also changed the funds amount, PAL/TAL rules, work hours, PGWP rules and spouse work permits.

Here is what applies to applications today.

SDS Closed on 8 November 2024

All Nepali students now apply through the regular study permit process. There is no fast 20-day stream, no fixed IRCC English score and no separate CAD 10,000 GIC rule.

Processing times change every week. Check the current time for Nepal on the IRCC processing times page before you plan your intake.

Proof of Funds: CAD 23,448

For applications from 1 September 2026, you must show first-year tuition plus CAD 23,448 for living costs (one person, outside Quebec). That is about NPR 25.5 lakh at NPR 108.60 per CAD (Nepal Rastra Bank, 27 September 2026). Check what it means today with our CAD to NPR forex converter.

See the family table below and our cost to study in Canada guide.

PAL/TAL: Master's and PhD Now Exempt

Most students need a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL). From 1 January 2026, students in degree-granting master’s or doctoral programs at a public DLI no longer need one.

Diploma, postgraduate certificate and bachelor’s students still need it. Your college or university arranges it.

Work Up to 24 Hours a Week

Eligible students can work up to 24 hours per week off campus during academic terms, and full time during scheduled breaks. The old 20-hour limit no longer applies.

PGWP: Field of Study and Language Rules

If you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024, a college or polytechnic program must be in an eligible field of study for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees have no field restriction.

PGWP applicants also need CLB 7 in all four skills after a university degree, or CLB 5 after a college program.

Spouse Work Permits Are Limited

Since 21 January 2025, your spouse can get an open work permit only if you study a master’s program of 16 months or longer, a doctoral program or an eligible professional degree. Spouses of diploma and bachelor’s students no longer qualify.

There is no route to choose any more. Every Nepali student applies through the same study permit process. What decides your result is how clearly your documents show your study plan, your funds and your ties to Nepal.

The core requirements below apply to every applicant.

⚠️ Important Note: It is important to understand the difference between university admission requirements and Canadian student visa requirements.

Universities evaluate your academic qualifications and English proficiency before issuing a Letter of Acceptance (LOA). IRCC then reviews your financial proof, study plan, and immigration eligibility when deciding whether to grant a study permit.

What Are the Core Requirements for a Canada Study Permit?

You need an LOA from a DLI, a PAL/TAL if required, a valid passport, proof of funds, a medical exam and a clear study plan. IRCC sets these rules for every Nepali student.

Your college or university also sets its own academic and English requirements before it issues your Letter of Acceptance (LOA).

🎓 Academic Requirements

Canadian colleges and universities set minimum GPA or equivalent percentage requirements for international students, though exact requirements vary by institution and course. Competitive programs like engineering, business, computer science, or health sciences may require higher scores.

  • Diploma/Advanced Diploma: Minimum 2.5 GPA or 60% in +2, A-Levels, or equivalent high school degree
  • Bachelor’s Degree: Completion of +2/A-Level with at least 2.7 GPA, but may be more depending on the program
  • Postgraduate Diploma (PG): A bachelor’s degree in a related field with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Master’s Degree: Bachelor’s degree with 3.0 GPA or higher in a relevant field

Not sure how your NEB grades compare? Convert your NEB GPA to a percentage with our NEB GPA calculator.

🗣️ Language Proficiency

Your college or university sets the English score. IRCC has had no fixed IELTS band since SDS closed.

  • Most colleges ask for IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, or PTE 53 to 60.
  • Most universities ask for IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or PTE 60 to 65.
  • TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic are widely accepted too.

See minimum IELTS and PTE scores for Canada for every study level.

📄 Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a DLI

You must first be admitted to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Only DLIs are authorised to host international students, and your visa application will be refused if your college or university is not on the official list. The LOA must clearly state your program, duration of study, and conditions (if any). 👉 Check the official list of DLIs here.

Check that your name, program, level, intake and campus on the LOA match your SOP and financial documents. If the LOA is conditional, meet the condition before you apply.

🛂 Valid Passport

A valid passport is essential for your entire period of study in Canada. Nepali students should ensure their passport will not expire before the end of their program. If it does, the study permit may only be issued until the passport expiry date. To avoid issues, renew your passport early through the Department of Passports, Nepal.

💰 Proof of Funds

You must show you can pay your first year of tuition plus living costs, without relying on work in Canada.

For applications from 1 September 2026, you need CAD 23,448 for yourself (outside Quebec). Each family member who comes with you adds about CAD 5,700 to 7,700, so a family of four needs CAD 43,572. See the full table on IRCC’s proof of funds page.

Nepali students usually show bank statements, an education loan, sponsor income documents and a property valuation. Many also buy a GIC from a Canadian bank. See how much annual income your sponsor needs.

🏥 Medical Examination

If your study program is longer than six months, IRCC requires you to complete a medical exam with a panel physician approved by Canada. The results are sent directly to the visa office. Booking the exam early is advised, as delays in results can slow down your application.

👮 Police Clearance Certificate

In some cases, you may be asked to submit a Police Clearance Certificate from the Nepal Police. This proves you have no criminal record and are eligible to study abroad. Certificates can be obtained from the Police Headquarters in Naxal, Kathmandu.

🎯 Intention to Leave Canada After Studies

All applicants must convince the visa officer that they will return to Nepal after their studies, unless they later qualify for a work permit or permanent residency. A well-written Statement of Purpose (SOP) can help explain your career goals and show how studying in Canada fits into your future plans.

🎓 Age Requirement for Canada Student Visa

There is no fixed upper age requirement for Canada student visa applicants. However, IRCC carefully reviews study gaps. If you are applying after a long break, you must provide valid reasons such as work experience, training, or career advancement. Generally, younger students (fresh after +2 or bachelor’s) face fewer complications, while mature students need stronger documentation.

If you have a gap or a previous refusal, be honest about it. Explain it and attach proof such as work letters, training certificates or business documents. A past refusal is not an automatic no if your new file fixes the earlier concern.

🏛️ Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)

Most diploma, postgraduate certificate and bachelor’s students need a PAL or TAL from the province where they will study. Your DLI arranges it. Master’s and PhD students at public DLIs are exempt from 1 January 2026. Check with your school before you apply.

✅ Follow Your Permit Conditions After Arrival

Approval is not the last step. You must stay enrolled at your DLI, keep studying actively and respect the 24-hour work limit.

Your permit usually expires 90 days after your program ends, so apply for an extension early if you need one. If you change school, make sure the new school is also a DLI.

📚 A Course That Matches Your Profile

Visa officers want to see why your program makes sense for you. It does not have to match your past subject exactly, but the link must be logical and explained in your SOP.

Your profileStrong choiceWeak choice
+2 ManagementBusiness, accounting, marketing, hospitalityUnrelated technical course with no explanation

How Much Does a Canada Study Permit Cost and How Long Does It Take?

The study permit fee is CAD 150 and biometrics cost CAD 85. Processing times change often, so always check the live IRCC figure.

Processing Time

IRCC publishes the current processing time for Nepal on its IRCC processing times page. The old 20 to 30 day SDS timeline no longer exists. Apply as soon as you have your LOA and PAL/TAL.

What Happens After You Apply?

After you submit online, IRCC sends a biometrics instruction letter. Book your biometrics at the visa application centre in Kathmandu and complete your medical exam. The officer may then ask for more documents or an interview.

Canada Study Visa Fees

  • Study permit: CAD 150 (about NPR 16,290)
  • Biometrics: CAD 85 (about NPR 9,230)
  • Medical exam: paid directly to the panel physician in Nepal. Ask the clinic for the current fee.

NPR amounts use NPR 108.60 per CAD (Nepal Rastra Bank, 27 September 2026). Check what they mean today with our CAD to NPR forex converter, and the latest fees on the IRCC fee list.

Apply early and keep your file consistent. Your LOA, PAL/TAL, SOP and financial documents should tell the same story. Check the IRCC processing times page before you choose your intake.

Common Reasons for Visa Refusal

Even strong students sometimes face refusals, not because they are unqualified, but because of avoidable mistakes in their visa file. Here are the most common issues for Nepali students, explained with real-life scenarios:

Weak Proof of Funds

Case: A student from Chitwan submitted bank statements that showed the required amount, but most deposits were made just a few weeks before applying. The visa officer suspected the funds were not genuinely available.
Result: Application refused.
How Goreto fixes this: We guide families to structure savings well in advance, prepare supporting income documents (salary, remittances, business income), and show valid financial proof in both CAD and NPR.

Ignoring Conditional LOAs

Case: A Kathmandu student received a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) “conditional on final transcripts.” They applied for the visa without submitting those transcripts, hoping IRCC would ignore it.
Result: Visa refused due to incomplete admission proof.
How Goreto fixes this: We carefully review your LOA, ensure all conditions are met, and only file once your admission status is 100% valid.

English Score Below the School Requirement

Case: A student had an overall 6.0 IELTS but Writing was 5.5. Their chosen university needed 6.0 in every band, so the LOA stayed conditional. Result: The visa could not be filed in time for the intake. How Goreto fixes this: We check your scores against each school’s rules before you apply, and help with re-test planning or programs that accept your score.

Vague Statement of Purpose

Case: A Lalitpur student copied an SOP template from the internet. The visa officer found it generic, with no clear career link to Nepal.
Result: Refused for “lack of genuine study intent.”
How Goreto fixes this: We work with you to draft a strong, personal SOP that highlights your academic history, future career goals, and why Canada is the right step, so officers see a genuine plan.

Missing PAL/TAL

Case: A Pokhara applicant submitted everything but forgot the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) that most diploma and bachelor’s students need.
Result: Automatic refusal.
How Goreto fixes this: We coordinate with your institution to secure the PAL/TAL on time and attach it properly to your file.

Most refusals come down to documents and presentation, not capability. Goreto’s role is to ensure your file tells a clear, genuine story that meets every Canada study visa requirement
