Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) sits about halfway between Calgary and Edmonton, on Treaty 7 and Treaty 6 land in Red Deer, Alberta. Founded in 1964 as Red Deer College, the school became a polytechnic institute in 2021, gaining the authority to grant bachelor’s degrees alongside its long-running certificates, diplomas, applied degrees, and apprenticeships.
Today RDP serves close to 10,000 students in credit, non-credit, and apprenticeship programs, organized under four academic schools: the Donald School of Business, the School of Health & Wellness, the School of Arts & Education, and the School of Trades & Technology.
Red Deer Polytechnic groups its programs under four academic schools, so it helps to know which one your intended career path falls under before you apply.
The Donald School of Business offers diploma and degree options in business administration and accounting — a natural fit if you’re weighing a BBA or business administration degree.
The School of Health & Wellness is home to most of RDP’s health programs, including the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Practical Nurse Diploma, Health Care Aide Certificate, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Occupational and Physical Therapist Assistant. If nursing is the goal, see Goreto’s guide to a Bachelor of Nursing in Canada.
The School of Arts & Education covers the Bachelor of Education, Early Learning and Child Care, and RDP’s creative arts programs.
The School of Trades & Technology runs RDP’s engineering technology diplomas — see Goreto’s guide to engineering programs in Canada — plus computer and information technology programs such as Network Administration and Software Development, and RDP’s apprenticeship trades, where the polytechnic’s roots run deepest.
Every program page on RDP’s website lists its own admission requirements and English-proficiency thresholds, so check the specific program before you apply.
Applying to RDP as an international student follows a defined process. Here’s the shape of it.
Full guidance for each step, including which documents to send and where, is available on RDP’s international admissions page, or through Goreto’s resources for studying abroad.

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP, formerly Red Deer College) runs a General Awards Application each year, open March 1 through May 31 — one application automatically considers you for the awards and bursaries you’re eligible for. International students become eligible once they’ve completed at least one full-time credit year at RDP and are continuing full-time study.
Award notifications go out by RDP email over the summer, so check your RDP inbox regularly and keep your contact details current. RDP also runs athletics scholarships for student-athletes — speak with a team’s head coach about eligibility — plus program-specific and need-based funding listed year-round through MyRDP.
Student life at RDP runs through the Students’ Association of RDP (SARDP), which represents students and organizes clubs and events on campus. RDP’s varsity teams, the Kings and Queens, compete in basketball, soccer, volleyball, hockey, badminton, cross country running, curling, and rodeo, largely out of the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, built for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
On the support side, RDP runs a Student Connect Centre, tutoring and academic advising, counselling and health and wellbeing services, accessibility services, and career services for résumé help and job searches. The library, Cornerstone Dining, and a campus store round out day-to-day life on the Red Deer campus.
International students specifically have access to an International Student Navigator and an International Recruitment team, for everything from study-permit questions to settling in.
Red Deer is a smaller city than Calgary or Edmonton, about ninety minutes from either one along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway — a quieter, lower-cost starting point for Nepali students who’d rather ease into Canadian life than land in a big city on day one.
RDP’s International Recruitment team works specifically with applicants from South Asia and can answer questions on programs, English-proficiency requirements, and the study-permit process before you apply.
Once you’re enrolled, the International Student Navigator and Student Connect Centre are there for day-to-day support — everything from immigration questions to connecting with other students on campus.
Red Deer Polytechnic is an ideal destination for international students looking for an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
The college places a strong emphasis on student support services, ensuring that students have the resources they need to thrive academically and personally.
