Studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the UK can be expensive for Nepali students. However, the tuition fee shown by a university is not always the final amount you may have to pay.
UK universities offer scholarships, bursaries, grants, country-specific awards and early-payment discounts that can reduce study costs. Some universities award them automatically. Others require a separate application or early tuition payment.
*Currency note: NPR figures below are approximate and calculated using £1 ≈ NPR 204.48. Exchange rates change regularly.
| Funding type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Scholarship | Usually awarded based on academic performance, merit, leadership, talent, nationality or other criteria. |
| Bursary | Financial support often based on nationality, financial circumstances or another eligibility condition. |
| Grant | Non-repayable financial support for living costs, hardship, research or another specific purpose. |
| Tuition fee discount | An amount deducted directly from your university tuition fees. |
| Early-bird / early-payment discount | A discount for paying a deposit or tuition fees before a set deadline. |
Universities may use these terms in slightly different ways. Therefore, students should always check the conditions of each award.
Here are some current examples of funding available to Nepali or international students.
| University/Funding | Study level | Award | Approx. NPR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swansea University Nepal Bursary | Bachelor’s & taught Master’s | £6,000 first-year tuition reduction | NPR 12.27 lakh |
| Swansea Progression Bursary | Bachelor’s | £2,000 in subsequent eligible years | NPR 4.09 lakh/year |
| University of South Wales Scholarship | Bachelor’s & Master’s | £2,500 per year | NPR 5.11 lakh/year |
| Sussex Nepal Scholarship 2026 | Master’s | £4,000 | NPR 8.18 lakh |
| Lancaster International Regional Scholarship 2026 | Master’s | £10,000 | NPR 20.45 lakh |
Swansea’s Nepal Bursary is especially relevant for self-funded students from Nepal. Eligible students can receive £6,000 off tuition fees for a taught undergraduate or postgraduate course. In addition, undergraduate students can receive another £2,000 in eligible later years.
The University of South Wales currently offers an automatic £2,500-per-year scholarship for eligible self-funding students from Nepal. It applies to both undergraduate and postgraduate study for September 2026 and February 2027 entry.
For Master’s students, Sussex offers eligible Nepalese students a £4,000 tuition reduction. Meanwhile, Lancaster’s 2026 International Regional Scholarship includes Nepal and can provide a £10,000 postgraduate tuition reduction.
Grants are different from normal admission scholarships. Universities often provide them after enrolment to support students with a particular financial need.
For example, the University of Bradford’s Student Support Fund is available to eligible international students facing financial difficulty. Awards can be worth up to £2,000, or around NPR 4.09 lakh. However, the fund supports essential living costs and cannot be used to pay tuition fees.
Students should also look beyond scholarships. Paying tuition fees or a required deposit early can sometimes provide an extra discount.
| Example | Discount | Approx. saving |
|---|---|---|
| University College Birmingham | £500 | NPR 1.02 lakh |
| University of Lincoln | £1,000 early-payment reduction | NPR 2.04 lakh |
| Goldsmiths, University of London | 10% of tuition fees | Depends on course fee |
| University of East London | 5% of course fees | Depends on course fee |
University College Birmingham offers a £500 early-payment discount to eligible full-time Bachelor’s and postgraduate students. To qualify, students must pay their tuition fees in full before the relevant deadline. For September 2026 entry, the published deadline is 25 September 2026.
Goldsmiths offered a 10% tuition-fee reduction for eligible September 2026 undergraduate and postgraduate taught students who paid the required deposit early. For example, a £20,160 Master’s tuition fee could fall to £18,144. That means a saving of £2,016, or roughly NPR 4.12 lakh.
However, these discounts may have different deadlines. They may also not always be combined with another scholarship. Therefore, students should check the university’s funding terms before making a payment.
