Australia has introduced major changes to its student visa system, and some of the rules students previously relied on are no longer the same.
So, what exactly has changed, and who is affected? Here’s a simple breakdown.
The Australian Government introduced new requirements for Student visas (subclass 500) and Student Guardian visas (subclass 590) on 2 October 2026.
Here’s a quick overview:
| Visa Area | What’s Changed? |
|---|---|
| Applying inside Australia | Most affected applicants must apply offshore |
| Applying for another Student visa | Restricted unless an exemption applies |
| Spouse and dependants | Generally not permitted in new applications |
| Bringing family later | No longer permitted |
| Changing education providers | Tighter restrictions, with further changes planned |
These rules do not cancel existing valid Student visas. Applications submitted before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the rules applicable when they were lodged.
One of the biggest changes concerns onshore Student visa applications.
Most temporary visa holders, including Visitor, Temporary Graduate and certain work visa holders, can no longer apply for a Student visa while in Australia.
Current Student visa holders applying for another Student visa also face restrictions.
What does this mean?
Important: Not every student already in Australia must leave. The requirement depends on their current visa and eligibility for an exemption.
This is another significant change for Nepali students considering Australia with their families.
From 2 October 2026, most Student visa applicants can no longer include a spouse, partner or dependent children in their application.
However, limited exemptions apply.
| Applicant Category | Can Include Eligible Dependants? |
|---|---|
| Most bachelor’s students | Generally no |
| Most master’s coursework students | Generally no |
| PhD students | May qualify |
| Eligible government-sponsored students | May qualify |
| Certain existing student families | May qualify under transitional arrangements |
Other exemptions apply to eligible Pacific and ASEAN nationals.
Family members can no longer be added as subsequent entrants after a Student visa has been granted. There are no exemptions to this restriction.
Students considering Australia with a spouse or children should therefore review their family arrangements before applying.
Australia is also tightening rules around students changing education providers.
The October 2026 reforms include stronger restrictions on transferring between institutions, particularly when moving from higher education to vocational education and training (VET).
The government has also announced plans for a new Student visa Transfer stream in 2027. The detailed requirements for that future stream are still being developed.
Australia remains open to genuine international students, but understanding the new requirements is essential.
