Got the UK on your list for 2027? Before choosing your university or preparing your visa application, there are some important changes you should know about.

The UK is introducing shorter post-study work opportunities and higher financial requirements, while existing restrictions on student dependants remain in place. Here’s what these developments mean for Nepali students applying for a UK student visa in 2026/2027.

1. UK Graduate Visa Reduced to 18 Months

One of the biggest changes concerns the UK Graduate visa, commonly called the post-study work (PSW) visa.

From 1 January 2027, eligible bachelor’s and master’s graduates applying for this visa will receive 18 months instead of two years.

Graduate Visa Application DateVisa Duration
On or before 31 December 20262 years
From 1 January 202718 months
Eligible PhD and doctoral graduates3 years

What does this mean? Nepali students beginning their degrees in 2027 should consider the shorter post-study work period when exploring future career opportunities.

Remember, the change depends on when you apply for the Graduate visa, not when you begin university.

2. Higher UK Student Visa Financial Requirements

From 30 November 2026, the UK will increase the minimum living funds students must demonstrate for visa applications.

Study LocationMonthly RequirementMaximum for 9 Months
London£1,570£14,130
Outside London£1,203£10,827

These amounts exclude tuition fees and other applicable visa-related expenses.

Students generally need to maintain the required funds for 28 consecutive days, with the qualifying period ending within 31 days before their application.

For Nepali applicants: Preparing financial documents early and checking the requirements applicable on your submission date is essential.

3. Can Nepali Students Still Bring Dependants?

The UK continues to restrict which international students can bring spouses, partners or children.

Generally, eligible dependants are permitted for:

  • Students pursuing qualifying PhD or research-based higher degrees.
  • Government-sponsored students undertaking eligible courses lasting more than six months.

Most students enrolling in taught master’s or undergraduate programs cannot bring dependants under the standard rules. These restrictions are not newly introduced for 2027, but remain important when choosing a course.

4. What Should You Check Before Applying?

If you’re considering the UK 2027 intake from Nepal, make sure to:

  • Verify your university’s sponsorship status and course eligibility.
  • Prepare the required financial evidence.
  • Understand Graduate visa eligibility and duration.
  • Check dependant rules before making family arrangements.
  • Review the latest UKVI requirements before applying.
