The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) is the central bank of Nepal responsible for setting daily foreign exchange rates. These rates determine the value of the Nepali Rupee (NPR) against major international currencies. The NRB publishes these rates every business day, and all commercial banks and financial institutions in Nepal follow these reference rates.
For students planning to study abroad, understanding forex rates is crucial for financial planning. Tuition fees, living expenses, accommodation costs, and travel expenses are all denominated in foreign currencies. Even small fluctuations in exchange rates can significantly impact the total cost of studying abroad.
For example, if you’re planning to study in Canada and the CAD/NPR rate moves from NPR 95 to NPR 98, a tuition fee of CAD 20,000 would cost an additional NPR 60,000. This makes it essential to monitor exchange rates and plan remittances strategically.
The world’s reserve currency. US universities charge between $20,000-$60,000 per year in tuition.
One of the most popular destinations. Tuition ranges from CAD 15,000-35,000 per year.
Growing destination for Nepali students. Tuition ranges from AUD 20,000-45,000 annually.
Prestigious universities with tuition from £10,000-38,000 per year for international students.
Nepal operates a managed floating exchange rate system. While the market determines rates for most currencies, the Nepali Rupee is pegged to the Indian Rupee (INR) at a fixed rate of NPR 1.60 per INR 1. This peg has been in place since 1993 and is maintained to facilitate bilateral trade and remittances with India.
For all other currencies, the NRB sets daily indicative rates based on international market movements, with commercial banks allowed to offer rates within a certain margin. When sending money to Nepal from abroad (inward remittance) or sending money from Nepal for tuition fees (outward remittance), the rates applied may differ slightly.
The exchange rate changes daily as set by Nepal Rastra Bank. Check the table above for today’s rate. As a reference, 1 USD is approximately NPR 133-135.
All rates displayed are based on Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) daily published forex rates, which serve as the reference for all financial institutions in Nepal.
The ‘Buy’ rate is the rate at which banks purchase foreign currency from you (you receive NPR). The ‘Sell’ rate is the rate at which banks sell foreign currency to you (you pay NPR). The sell rate is always slightly higher.
Nepal and India maintain a fixed exchange rate of NPR 1.60 = INR 1. This peg was established in 1993 to facilitate bilateral trade, tourism, and the free flow of currency between the two countries.
You can send tuition fees through licensed commercial banks using their TT (Telegraphic Transfer) or SWIFT services. You’ll need your university’s bank details, admission letter, and fee invoice. Banks charge a service fee plus the exchange rate margin.
No. While NRB sets the reference rate, commercial banks can offer slightly different rates within their margin. It’s advisable to compare rates from multiple banks before making large transfers.
As per NRB regulations, students studying abroad can remit up to USD 40,000 per academic year for tuition and living expenses. Additional amounts may be permitted with proper documentation.
