As a Nepali student planning to study in the UK, you probably have many questions about requirements, timelines, and documents. This FAQ clears common doubts, explains the key requirements, and guides you through the steps you need to take so you can begin your UK study journey with confidence.

1. What visa do Nepali students need to study in the UK?

Nepali students  who plan to study a full-time course in the UK for more than 6 months must apply for the UK Student Visa (also called the Student Route, formerly Tier 4).

2. How much is the UK Student visa application fee in 2025?

Universities commonly quote £490–£524; many list £524 for applications made in/after 2024. Confirm the fee during the UKVI application flow as fees can change.

3. What are the main eligibility requirements for a UK student visa from Nepal?

You’ll need:

  • An unconditional offer and CAS letter from a licensed UK university.

  • Proof of funds (tuition + living costs).

  • A valid English test score (usually IELTS UKVI, PTE UKVI, etc.).

  • Valid passport.

  • TB(Tuberculosis) test certificate (from IOM Kathmandu).

  • Visa application and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) payment receipts.

4. What is a CAS letter and why is it important?

CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a unique reference number issued by your UK university after you accept their offer. It includes your course, fees, and sponsor details. You cannot apply for the UK student visa without a CAS number.

5. How much bank balance / funds do Nepali students need for the UK student visa?

Here’s the updated table for UK student visa financial requirements, based on the latest UKVI rules (effective from 2 January 2025):

Show 1 year of tuition fees (as on your CAS) + living costs for up to 9 months:

Location of StudyMonthly Living Cost RequiredMaximum Months CountedTotal Living Funds Required
Inside London£1,4839£13,347
Outside London£1,1369£10,224

Funds must be held for at least 28 consecutive days, and the bank statement must be no more than 31 days old on the date of your visa application.

6. What English language test do Nepali students need for UK study?

Most universities and UK visas accept:

  • IELTS Academic UKVI – popular and approved by UKVI.

  • PTE Academic UKVI – accepted by many UK universities now.

  • TOEFL iBT (check uni policy) – accepted by some universities (but not a SELT for visa unless taken in a specific way).

  • Common minimum score: IELTS 6.0 overall with no band less than 5.5 (varies by course/university).

7. How long does it take to get the UK student visa from Nepal?

On average, it takes about 3 weeks after the biometrics appointment.
You can pay for Priority (5 working days) or Super Priority (1 working day), if available. Always check the current UKVI processing times.

8. Are there interviews or credibility checks?

UKVI and universities may conduct credibility interviews to confirm your course choice, finances, and future plans. Prepare to discuss your academic background, finances, and post-study intentions honestly, consistent with your CAS/SOP. (Universities outline what to expect.)

9. Where do I give biometrics in Nepal?

At VFS Global, Kathmandu (current UK visa application centre for Nepal). Book after submitting the online application. Check the VFS Nepal UK page for address/hours and premium services.

10. What are the UK Study Intakes for Nepali Students?

UK universities offer three main intakes every year for international students, including those from Nepal.

  • September/October (Main Intake):

Biggest intake with the most course and university options. Ideal if you want scholarships and time to prepare. Apply 6–12 months in advance.

  • January/February (Second Intake):

Good option if you miss the September intake. Fewer courses than September but still widely accepted. Apply by mid-year.

  • May (Limited Intake):

Offered by fewer universities with select programs (often business, IT or pathway courses). Good for early starters. Apply by late winter.

Tip: If you’re fully prepared, aim for the September intake. Otherwise, January and May are great alternatives depending on course availability and readiness.

11. Can Nepali students work part-time in the UK during study?

Yes, students with a valid Student Visa:

  • Can work up to 20 hours/week during term time.

  • Can work full-time during holidays.

  • Cannot be self-employed or work in some restricted roles.

12. What are the tuition fees for UK universities for Nepali students?

It varies a lot by course and university:

  • Undergraduate & Masters: approx. £15,000 – £30,000+ per year

  • Ranking, course type, and university location impact fees heavily.

  • Scholarships may reduce costs, so always apply early.
