Quick answer

The essentials at a glance

Cape Breton University takes international students into eight bachelor's programs, with majors such as Accounting, Marketing and Supply Chain Management, and four on-campus master's degrees, all on its Sydney campus. Its strongest areas for Nepali students are business, hospitality, engineering technology, and 16-month master's degrees in AI and business analytics and digital marketing.

CBU says all its full-time, in-person bachelor's and master's degrees are PGWP-eligible. The exceptions are online programs, such as the Master of Education degrees, and the Bachelor of Engineering (Transfer), which qualifies only after you finish it at Dalhousie.

Which Cape Breton University programs can Nepali students apply to?

CBU takes international students into eight bachelor’s programs in September, January and May, plus the BScN, the Bachelor of Engineering (Transfer) and four on-campus master’s degrees.

The programs come in two levels:

  • Bachelor’s degrees (3 or 4 years) after NEB +2: Arts, Science, Business Administration, Engineering Technology, Health Sciences (Public Health), Hospitality and Tourism Management, Arts Community Studies, and Arts and Science in Environment. You choose a major or stream inside the degree, such as Accounting or Supply Chain Management in the BBA, or Mechanical or Electronics and Controls in engineering technology.
  • Master’s degrees after a bachelor’s: Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics, Digital Marketing and Healthcare Leadership and Innovation (16 months each, September starts), and the two-year MBA in Community Economic Development.

CBU’s three Master of Education degrees are online only, and the post-baccalaureate diplomas it used to offer aren’t on its current program list. Applications close early if a program’s seats fill, so check CBU’s academic programs and its international application deadlines before you apply.

Which Cape Breton University programs are PGWP eligible?

CBU says all its full-time, in-person bachelor’s and master’s degrees are PGWP-eligible, so every program in the table below qualifies; the online Master of Education degrees and the Manufacturing stream do not.

If you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024, a diploma or certificate leads to a Post-Graduation Work Permit only if its field of study is eligible. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees have no field-of-study rule. You also need CLB 7 in English as a degree graduate, and you must take at least half of the program in class.

CBU explains this on its IRCC and PGWP page, last updated in October 2024, and adds that it can’t guarantee a PGWP. These programs are open to you but are not PGWP routes on their own:

The two-year Diploma of Engineering Technology, an early exit from the BET, isn’t a degree, so choose the three-year bachelor’s if you want a PGWP. Our PGWP guide for Nepali students explains the rules.

Which Cape Breton University programs are popular with Nepali students?

The table shows CBU’s programs in the course areas most popular with Nepali and Indian students, up to two per area, with each one’s credential, length and campus.

Programs are grouped by course area, and all of them are PGWP-eligible degrees (see the PGWP section above). CBU starts bachelor’s degrees in September, January and May and most master’s degrees in September only, but each program sets its own intakes, so check the program’s own page for its exact dates.

International students can join the BScN only through the two-year advanced-standing route, after 30 university credits in subjects such as anatomy, physiology and microbiology. Fees are the same yearly total for most bachelor’s degrees; see the fee section of our Cape Breton University profile for the range in CAD and NPR.

What do you need for each program level?

Bachelor’s degrees need the NEB +2 with about a 65% average and the program’s Grade 12 subjects, and master’s degrees need a bachelor’s with a B average; IELTS is 6.5 with no band under 6.0 for both.

  • Bachelor’s degrees: IELTS 6.5 or PTE 59 (no score under 50). The BBA and hospitality degree ask for Grade 12 English and Math; the BSc, engineering technology and public health degrees also ask for two sciences.
  • Master’s degrees: IELTS 6.5 or PTE 59. The AI and Business Analytics and Digital Marketing master’s ask for a four-year bachelor’s (or equivalent) with a B average in the last 60 credits; the MBA asks for 75% and a GMAT or GRE score.
  • BScN and healthcare leadership: IELTS 7.0 with no band under 6.5, or PTE 66, with no exemption for studying in English.

To see where your +2 grades stand, convert your NEB GPA to a percentage with our NEB GPA calculator. Program-by-program examples, documents and the application steps are in our CBU admissions guide.

How do you choose the right Cape Breton University program?

Start with your background and your plan after graduation, then check the program’s delivery (in person, not online), its intakes and its entry rules on CBU’s own program page.

  • Coming from +2? Look at the four-year BBA with a major, the three-year Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management or the three-year Bachelor of Engineering Technology. A bachelor’s degree of 3 years or more can lead to a 3-year PGWP.
  • Already hold a bachelor’s degree? A 16-month master’s, such as Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics or Digital Marketing, is the quickest route, and a master’s can lead to a PGWP of up to 3 years. Check that your degree counts as four years.
  • Want IT or computing? CBU has no computer science or data science bachelor’s degree. The AI and Business Analytics master’s is its main technology option, and it needs a statistics course.
  • Want work experience? The hospitality degree has two paid internships, and the Mechanical stream has a co-op option. The AI and Business Analytics master’s ends with a 420-hour internship or a project, and the healthcare leadership master’s with an internship or a project.

For more on each type of program, see our guides to a BBA in Canada, a bachelor’s in hospitality management and an MBA in Canada.

Frequently asked questions about CBU programs

CBU says all its full-time, in-person bachelor's and master's degrees are PGWP-eligible, because degrees have no field-of-study rule. The exceptions are online programs, such as the Master of Education degrees and the Manufacturing stream, and the Bachelor of Engineering (Transfer), which counts only after you finish the degree at Dalhousie University.

Four on-campus master's degrees: Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics, Digital Marketing, and Healthcare Leadership and Innovation (16 months each, September starts), and the two-year MBA in Community Economic Development, which starts in September, January or July. The Master of Education degrees are online only.

All eight bachelor's programs open to international students take January starts, including the BBA, the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, the Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health). The MBA also starts in January. International applications for January usually close in mid-October, or earlier if seats fill.

Not as a bachelor's degree: CBU has no computer science or data science bachelor's. Its technology option is the 16-month Master of Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics, for students with a four-year bachelor's in science, math, computing, business, economics or engineering and a statistics course.

Some programs, such as the Master of Education degrees and the Manufacturing stream of engineering technology, are delivered online, but online study doesn't lead to a study permit or a PGWP. This guide lists only programs taught in person on CBU's Sydney campus.

Only through the two-year advanced-standing BScN route, which needs 30 university credits including anatomy, physiology, microbiology, English and statistics, and IELTS 7.0 with no band under 6.5. CBU's BScN mainly serves Nova Scotia residents, so seats for international students are limited.
