University Canada West

University Canada West (UCW) is a private, business- and technology-focused university in downtown Vancouver, BC, established in 2004 and part of Global University Systems (GUS). Its main campus, Vancouver House, sits at 1461 Granville Street, with a second location at West Pender.

UCW offers hybrid delivery (on-campus plus guided online learning) as well as fully online programs — a flexible model that suits both traditional students and working professionals who want a Canadian business credential without pausing their career.

UCW’s flagship program is its MBA — 15 courses over roughly 24 months, delivered in hybrid format (about 2.5 hours on campus plus 1.5 hours online per week), with four intakes a year. Other programs include the Bachelor of Commerce, BA in Business Communication, Associate of Arts, a University Access Program for students who need academic preparation first, and an MBA Foundation pathway.

UCW’s MBA and Bachelor of Commerce both hold ACBSP Global Business Accreditation — UCW was the first private university in Canada to earn it. The teaching model is intentionally teaching-intensive, with Program Advisory Committees connecting the curriculum directly to industry needs.

UCW doesn’t appear in the QS or THE global ranking tables — typical for a smaller private university. Instead, it leans on quality signals: a 5-star overall rating from QS Stars (with a further 5 stars in the Specialist Criteria category for its MBA), ACBSP accreditation, BC’s Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation, and Designated Learning Institution (DLI) status.

Taken together, these credentials are a reasonable substitute for a global rank when you’re evaluating a smaller, business-focused private university.

MBA applicants generally need a bachelor’s degree with a GPA around 3.0 out of 4.33; GMAT/GRE scores are optional. UCW also offers alternate entry routes — through a recognized professional designation, a business or STEM degree, or 3+ years of management experience — plus an MBA Foundation pathway for applicants who don’t yet meet the standard bar.

English requirements for the MBA are IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in writing), or equivalent TOEFL/PTE/Duolingo scores. Undergraduate programs commonly cite IELTS 6.5 overall as well — confirm the exact minimum for your specific program with UCW or your Goreto counsellor.

The application fee is CAD 150 (deducted from your tuition deposit). Tuition deposits are CAD 8,800 for hybrid international students and CAD 3,000 for online students. UCW runs four intakes a year: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.

The MBA’s total international tuition is CAD 46,095 for the full program. The Bachelor of Commerce runs approximately CAD 89,000 for the full program (roughly CAD 20,000/year) — confirm current figures on UCW’s official tuition page, since fees are reviewed annually and typically increase by up to 5% each January. Budget for textbooks separately, at roughly CAD 105/course.

UCW offers Scholarships for Academic Excellence worth CAD 10,000–20,000, awarded on academic merit — these apply broadly and aren’t restricted by region. UCW also runs regional grant programs for specific parts of the world; its Southeast Asia Regional Grant, for example, is limited to nationals of Southeast Asian countries and does not currently extend to Nepal, so Nepali applicants should ask UCW admissions directly which merit-based awards they qualify for rather than assuming a regional grant applies. Note: none of UCW’s scholarships apply to fully online programs — only hybrid, on-campus-inclusive programs are eligible.

UCW has no on-campus housing. It partners with off-campus student housing providers (including 4stay and GEC student housing) and offers housing assistance to help students find rentals. Vancouver has the highest rents of any major Canadian city, so build accommodation costs into your budget well before you arrive, and start your housing search early.

UCW’s student body draws from 50+ nationalities, and its downtown location sits right next to transit — Yaletown-Roundhouse and Vancouver City Centre stations are both close by. Students have access to clubs, cultural festivals, networking events, and a dedicated Career Development Centre.
