Royal Roads University

Royal Roads University is a public, degree-granting university located on Hatley Park National Historic Site near Colwood, British Columbia. The campus is situated in park-like grounds of 650 hectares (1,600 acres) which include the historic Hatley Castle and support facilities.

Originally founded in 1910 as Royal Roads Military College (RRMC), a military-themed educational institution, the school was revitalized in 1995 to become Royal Roads University. The institution is named for historic roadway, a former military road created for military access to Port Royal, which the school now stands behind. A deliberate alteration of the name was instituted by the Richard report to reflect the pending removal of military influence from institutional perpetuation. In 2004, RRU was named one of BC’s Top Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc., which was announced by The Vancouver Sun, and again in 2012.

Academics

Royal Roads offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 1,000 students in innovative degree programs including Aviation, Culinary Arts and Nursing.

The majority of RRU degree programs are delivered in a blended format, which allows students to complete the majority of their studies online, while still having the opportunity to meet in-person on campus for intensive learning sessions.

The University has a strong focus on experiential learning. RRU students are encouraged to apply their newly acquired knowledge to real world challenges by working in teams on leadership and management projects that are designed to have an immediate impact on the sponsoring organization.

The programs are delivered in a blended format, combining online courses with on-campus residency sessions. This format is designed to favor working professionals, who may complete the programs at a distance while maintaining their career.

When students are not on campus for their residencies, they remain connected with each other and the instructors through various online tools.

The University offers three formats:

  1. On-site with 100% face to face learning.
  2. Programs which is offered as a mix mode with some components taught in a face to face residency or online.
  3. Completely online

Residency based programs range from one to three weeks, and are often held on-campus, but select programs host their residencies in unique locations around the world.

Royal Roads provides experiential learning opportunities by integrating theory and practice through project-based problem solving in real world settings. Students also have access to professional development training offered by Continuing Studies for a fee, including workshops geared toward resume building and interview skills.
