Canada offers a wide range of programs for international as well as domestic students to get enrolled in. These courses cover fields such as engineering, medicine, business, tourism, liberal and fine arts, and so many others. Apart from the study options, the universities offer numerous intakes in Canada options.
So, even when a student doesn’t get enrolled in a university during a certain intake, he could easily apply for the next one. The fact that the Canadian Universities make the admission process quite convenient for the students is one of the main reasons why students from all over the world prefer to study in Canada.

There are two major intakes in Canada, however, there are many universities that offer three intakes as well. Multiple intakes allow the students to reapply in the universities if they happen to miss out on the chance, or when they’re not accepted the first time. The following are the details related to major intakes in Canada 2025.
| Intake | Starts From | Duration | Pros and Cons |
| Fall | September | 4 months (September to December) | This is the primary intake in Canada, and most students looking to apply in Canada do so in this intake. Since almost everyone applies for this intake, there is a very tough competition for acceptance and scholarship. |
| Winter | January | 4 months (January to April) | This is basically the continuation of the fall intake, and it is meant for the students who didn’t get accepted in the fall intake. The students are required to catch up with the ones admitted during fall intake. The competition for acceptance and scholarship is quite low during this intake. |
| Spring | May | 4 months (May to August) | This is the least preferred intake option, and so, not many courses are offered during this intake. It is basically a time for a break for the students, and so, most of them either choose to work or go back home, leaving the campuses almost empty. |

January or Winter Intake is the second popular intake option after September or fall intake. The students who’re not able to apply during the fall session, apply during the winter session. There are quite a few disadvantages of applying during this session.
Mainly, the time factor, as the students who’ve joined in this intake must finish studying their course in a shorter period of time in comparison to the ones who joined during fall.
Needless to say that students find themselves under a lot of pressure when doing so. The weather during this time is quite cold and unpleasant, mainly because Canada is a cold country in the first place. International students mainly face a lot of difficulties when they start their studies. The challenges are mainly related to the environment and culture. It’s tough for them to adapt to it in such a short period.
The January intake gives the opportunity to the students to apply for the program without waiting an entire year. Generally, the deadline for application in the winter intake ends between the months of September and November. This, however, might differ according to the university the student is applying to.
The winter intake lasts for a period of four months – January, February, March, and April
If you’re looking to get enrolled in the January intake, you should have applied before the month of November. Make sure to properly go through the university guidelines, as, in the case of a few universities and colleges, the deadline could be an earlier date.
All the universities and colleges in Canada offer admissions in January Intake. Some of the popular colleges and universities among them are Humber College, Centennial College, Algonquin College, St. Lawrence College, Red Deer College, University of Waterloo, University of Calgary, University of Alberta, and so on.

This is the time when most of the students go for a spring break to spend time with their families, and the campus premises are almost empty. It is for the same reason that very few universities in Canada offer courses for this intake.
Generally, the courses that are available during this time are the not-so-popular ones. And so, the students are forced to choose a program that they may not like. Weather-wise, it’s probably the best time to start your academic journey in Canada.
It is recommended that you start applying for this session in the month of October. The early bird rule implies this as well. The earlier you apply, the higher the chances of you getting better offers and scholarships. You should be able to apply between the months of October and December.
The spring session lasts for a period of four months – May, June, July, and August.
The deadline for May intake in Canada is December. However, it is strongly advised that you check the university guidelines, as different universities may offer different guidelines. In the case of a few, the last date happens to be in October itself.
In comparison to the other intakes, the list of colleges in Canada for May intake is quite short. Some of them are Mount Saint Vincent University, Brock University, University of the Fraser Valley, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Capilano University, New York Institute of Technology, Lakehead University, and so on.

September or fall intake in Canada is the most popular intake option in Canadian Universities. This is the time when students from all around the world apply to Canadian Universities, and so, there is tough competition. If you’re accepted for this intake, you could finish your studies for the year with ease and comfort, as there is an adequate amount of time in your hands.
Since this is the most popular intake period, all the programs and courses that you can think of are available for enrollment during this time. Weather-wise, fall is considered to be pleasant.
You need to apply almost one year before the intake begins. So, for September 2025, the right time to apply would be now, i.e. August 2023. The students generally have two months to apply for the intake.
The intake lasts for a duration of 4 months – September, October, November, and December.
The deadline for September Intake in Canada is October of the previous year. However, make sure to check the university guidelines, and the deadlines could differ as per the colleges. Also, keep in mind that this is the most popular intake so they might close admissions sooner.
