The PTE Academic exam plays a key role in university admission and student visa applications for Nepalese students planning to study abroad. Universities, colleges, and immigration authorities use PTE scores to assess whether applicants can succeed in English-taught academic environments.
PTE evaluates speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills using AI-based scoring and reports results on a 10–90 scale. These scores are accepted in more than 70 countries by 3,900+ educational institutions worldwide.
Students in Nepal choose PTE for its fast results, flexible test availability, and wide international acceptance. Targeted preparation improves per-skill performance, strengthens university applications, and reduces student visa risk.
PTE is a computer-based English proficiency test that assesses academic English skills for higher education and international migration. It measures how effectively you can speak, write, read, and listen in real academic and everyday contexts using automated (AI-powered) scoring.
The full form of PTE is Pearson Test of English. It is developed and administered by Pearson PLC, a global education and assessment organisation known for standardised academic testing.
Students and professionals planning to apply for a student or work visa in English-speaking countries should take the PTE Academic exam. It suits applicants who need a globally accepted English score for university admission and visa assessment.
Anyone aged 16 years or above can take the PTE exam, and no minimum educational qualification is required. Candidates under 18 years old must submit a parental consent form during registration, and there is no upper age limit for taking the test.
Nepalese students prefer PTE because it is fully computer-based and scored by AI, which reduces human bias and speeds up results. Most candidates receive scores within two business days, which helps them meet tight deadlines for admissions and visas.
70+ countries worldwide, including Australia, Canada, the UK, the US, and New Zealand, accept PTE. It is also recognised across Europe (Denmark, Finland, Germany, France, Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, etc.) and Asia (China, Japan, S.Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, etc.) for university admission and visa purposes.
The PTE Academic exam follows a single-session, computer-based format that tests speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills together in approximately two hours. All responses are recorded digitally through a microphone, and answers are evaluated using automated scoring. The PTE exam format is completely computer-based and has no paper-based version.
PTE scores are calculated using automated analysis of your responses across all tested skills. The system evaluates accuracy, fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and written structure based on predefined scoring algorithms.
Scores range from 10 to 90, where higher scores indicate stronger English proficiency. Each task contributes to multiple skills, which means performance in one section can influence more than one score area. For example, the Read Aloud task evaluates reading and speaking skills at the same time.
Communicative skills measure how effectively you use English to understand and convey meaning in real situations. These represent the 4 core language abilities assessed in the test:
Enabling skills measure the language components that support effective communication in written and spoken forms.
Enabling skills include:
Enabling skills affect your score by influencing multiple communicative skills at the same time. A weakness in one enabling skill can reduce scores across more than one section.
For example, in the Read Aloud task, the system assesses reading accuracy, pronunciation, and oral fluency together. If you read the text correctly but speak with poor pronunciation or pauses, your Speaking, Reading, and overall PTE scores can all be lowered by that single response.

The PTE Academic exam fee in Nepal in 2026 is $220, which is approximately NPR 32,000 to NPR 33,000. The exact amount in Nepalese Rupees varies depending on the current exchange rate at the time of payment.
The fee covers the complete test, score processing, and electronic score sharing with institutions. Candidates should always verify the final payable amount on the official PTE booking website before confirming their booking.
You can book the PTE Academic exam in Nepal directly through Pearson’s official PTE website. Test dates are available year-round, and seats depend on availability at your chosen location. Follow these steps to book your PTE test:
You should always check the latest test dates and seat availability on the official Pearson website before finalising your plans.
In Nepal, there are PTE test centres in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Itahari, and Butwal. The exact venues are as follows:

A PTE Academic score is valid for two years from the test date. Once the score expires, it can no longer be used for admission or visa purposes, and candidates must retake the PTE exam.
PTE Academic allows candidates to retake the exam if they want to improve their score or if their previous score does not meet university or visa requirements. Retakes are governed by Pearson’s official Retake Policy.
You can book a new PTE Academic test only after you have received the scores from your previous test. There is no fixed waiting period in days, and test availability depends on seat availability at your chosen centre.
Yes, you can take the PTE Academic exam up to 12 times within 12 months. You can take the test more than once a month, but you can only book one test at a time and book up to 6 months in advance.
Candidates must use the same Pearson account for all bookings. Creating a new account to bypass these rules violates Pearson’s malpractice policy. Creating multiple accounts to take more than 12 tests is ineffective because your passport information remains the same in every account, which is easily detected. As retakes are expensive, working with a reputable education consultancy can help you get the desired scores in one attempt.
The minimum PTE score for a student visa is usually 50 to 62, depending on the destination country and the level of study. Most universities and visa authorities set both overall and per-skill minimum requirements, and higher study levels usually require higher scores.
A minimum overall score of 50 is a mandatory PTE requirement for Australian student visas. The Department of Home Affairs also sets the minimum per-skill requirements, ranging from 47 to 54 per skill. Competitive courses and healthcare programs typically require higher scores.
58-60 overall for Bachelor’s programs and 60-65 overall for Master’s programs is the minimum PTE score requirement for Canada. Per-skill scores must also fall between 50 and 55. PhD and healthcare programs often require 65 or higher overall, with stronger per-skill thresholds.
The UK’s minimum PTE score requirement is 59–62 overall for Bachelor’s programs, and 62–65 for Master’s programs, with balanced scores across all skills. PhD and nursing or healthcare routes typically require 65 or above overall, with higher per-skill expectations.
Both PTE Academic and IELTS are widely accepted English proficiency tests, and neither is universally better than the other. The right choice depends on your test format preference, scoring style, preparation background, and application timelines, as both tests are accepted by universities and visa authorities.
PTE is not officially easier than IELTS, but many Nepalese students find it easier in practice. Based on Goreto’s experience, students who did not achieve their target score in IELTS often perform better in PTE because of its more predictable task format.
The main difference between PTE and IELTS is the test delivery and scoring method. PTE is fully computer-based and scored by AI, while IELTS includes a face-to-face Speaking test and a human-examined Writing task. PTE reports scores on a 10–90 scale and delivers results within two days, while IELTS uses a 0–9 band scale and takes 3 days to 15 days for results.
When comparing PTE and IELTS, students should also consider how they perform in computer-based tests versus examiner-led evaluations. Test format familiarity, comfort with using a computer, and result urgency often influence which option aligns better with individual strengths and application timelines.
Preparing for PTE in Nepal involves choosing between self-study and guided preparation through classes. The right approach depends on your current English level, target score, and how quickly you need results for admission or visa processing.
Self-study suits candidates with strong English fundamentals who simply need familiarity with the test format and scoring logic. It offers flexibility and lower cost, but it can be challenging to identify weaknesses and improve Speaking and Writing without an instructor’s feedback.
PTE preparation classes help students improve faster through structured study plans, expert feedback, and regular mock tests. Since PTE scores are based on multiple skills at once, instructors can help you respond in a way that improves more than one skill score through a single task. PTE classes also help you improve your scores quickly if your deadline is approaching fast.
Struggling to improve your PTE score? Goreto’s instructors can help you raise your overall and skill scores to meet the university and visa requirements of your dream destination.
The full form of PTE is Pearson Test of English. As the name suggests, it is an English proficiency test developed by Pearson and uses a computer-based testing method.
