Program Structure
September–December 2025:
- All new students take Themes and Perspectives in Island Studies (IST 6010) and may also take Research Methods and Design for Island Studies (IST 6040).
- Specialized courses include Islands and Tourism (IST 6230) for Island Tourism, Sustainability for Small Islands (IST 6250) for Sustainable Island Communities, and Public Policy in Small Islands (IST 6150) for International Relations and Island Public Policy.
January–April 2025:
- Island Tourism students take Approaches to the Management of Island Tourism (IST 6240).
- Sustainable Island Communities students take Political Ecology of Small Islands (IST 6130) and Blue/Green Development Strategies for Small Islands (IST 6260).
- International Relations and Island Public Policy students take International Relations and Island States (IST 6120) and Subnational Island Jurisdictions (IST 6270).
May–June 2025:
- All students undertake Theory and Practice of Island Research I (IST 6210), a work-study experience involving an applied research project.
September 2025–April 2026:
- Students register for 2-3 additional courses, including Strategies for Economic Development for Small Islands (IST 6110) for Island Tourism.
June 2026:
- Complete the Capstone Course: Communications Management and Island Issues (IST 6200).
July–August 2026:
- Undertake the second work-study experience, Theory and Practice of Island Research II (IST 6220), at the same or a different organization.
Upon successful completion of all courses and experiences, students graduate from the UPEI Master of Arts in Island Studies program.

General Admission Requirements:
- Honors or Majors Degree: Applicants must hold an Honors or majors baccalaureate degree or its equivalent.
- Transfer from Provisional Status: Students must meet the requirements for transfer from provisional student status.
Minimum Requirements:
- Degree: A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an honors or major program from a recognized institution.
- Academic Standing: Applicants should have an average of at least second-class standing (“B”, i.e., 70% to 79.9%) in their last four semesters or two undergraduate years.

- Fall Term: Applications must be submitted by July 1. All materials, including supplementary documents, should be received by July 8. If the deadline falls on a weekend, it extends to the next business day.
- Winter Term: Applications are due by November 1, with all materials required by November 8. Deadlines that fall on a weekend are moved to the first business day thereafter.
