Course Description 

The Bachelor of Environmental Studies program at the University of Prince Edward Island equips students with the interdisciplinary knowledge needed to address today’s complex environmental challenges. 

By integrating courses from science, arts, and business, students develop the skills to analyze environmental issues and create sustainable solutions. The program includes core courses, specialized tracks, and practical experience through internships, preparing graduates to make a positive impact locally and globally.

Course Requirements 

Core Environmental Studies Courses (15 Credit Hours)

  1. ENV 1010 – Introduction to Environmental Studies
  2. ENV 2030 – Societies and Sustainability: Past and Present
  3. ENV 2040 – Methods of Environmental Inquiry
  4. ENV 3010 – Environmental Studies Internship
  5. ENV 4010 – Public Scholars on Environmental Issues

Additional Environmental Studies Courses (27 Credit Hours)

  • Students must complete at least nine additional Environmental Studies (ENV) courses.
  • At least six of these courses must be at the 3000 level or above, including at least two at the 4000 level.
  • These courses can be selected as part of a specialization or as ENV electives.

  1. One of UPEI 1010, 1020, or 1030 (3 Hours Credit)
  2. Foundational Cognate Courses (9 Hours Credit)
    • Biology 1010 – Environmental Biology

    • Either Sociology 1010 – Introduction to Sociology I OR Anthropology 1050 – Introduction to Anthropology I
  3. 1 Course in Statistical Methods (3 Hours Credit)
    • Statistics 1210 – Introductory Statistics or another course with permission of the Director
  4. 4 Foundational Courses from Science and Business (12 Hours Credit)
    • 2 Science courses
    • 2 Science or Business courses
  5. 4 Foundational Courses from Arts (12 Hours Credit)
    • 1 Political Science or Economics course is recommended
    • 3 additional Arts courses

General Electives

  • The remaining credit hours required to complete the 120 credit hours for the BES degree can be fulfilled with general electives chosen by the student.

  • Students can choose to specialize in one of the following areas:
    1. Environmental Innovation and Change Management
    2. Environmental Thought and Practice
    3. Island Environments and Sustainability

Writing Intensive Course

  • All BES students must complete at least one Writing Intensive course as part of their graduation requirements.
    • Recommended courses include:

Co-operative Education (Optional)

  • The Co-op option allows students to integrate academic studies with practical work experience, including three paid work terms.

Minor in Environmental Studies (Optional)

  • A minor in Environmental Studies requires successful completion of 21 semester hours, including specific introductory and approved courses within the Faculties of Science and Arts.

Admission Criteria

For High School Graduates:

  • Canadian High School Equivalency:
    • Successful completion of Grade 12 examinations in a University Preparatory Program with an overall average of at least 70% (75% for Quebec Secondary V students) in the following subjects:
      • English
      • One Social Studies or Language course
      • Any three other academic courses (Grade 12 Math recommended)
    • Note: Grade 12 Math is a prerequisite for some First-Year Arts courses.
