As a Nepali student planning to study in the UK, you probably have many questions about requirements, timelines, and documents. This FAQ clears common doubts, explains the key requirements, and guides you through the steps you need to take so you can begin your UK study journey with confidence.
Nepali students who plan to study a full-time course in the UK for more than 6 months must apply for the UK Student Visa (also called the Student Route, formerly Tier 4).
Universities commonly quote £490–£524; many list £524 for applications made in/after 2024. Confirm the fee during the UKVI application flow as fees can change.
You’ll need:
An unconditional offer and CAS letter from a licensed UK university.
Proof of funds (tuition + living costs).
A valid English test score (usually IELTS UKVI, PTE UKVI, etc.).
Valid passport.
TB(Tuberculosis) test certificate (from IOM Kathmandu).
Visa application and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) payment receipts.
CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a unique reference number issued by your UK university after you accept their offer. It includes your course, fees, and sponsor details. You cannot apply for the UK student visa without a CAS number.
Here’s the updated table for UK student visa financial requirements, based on the latest UKVI rules (effective from 2 January 2025):
Show 1 year of tuition fees (as on your CAS) + living costs for up to 9 months:
| Location of Study | Monthly Living Cost Required | Maximum Months Counted | Total Living Funds Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inside London | £1,483 | 9 | £13,347 |
| Outside London | £1,136 | 9 | £10,224 |
Funds must be held for at least 28 consecutive days, and the bank statement must be no more than 31 days old on the date of your visa application.
Most universities and UK visas accept:
IELTS Academic UKVI – popular and approved by UKVI.
PTE Academic UKVI – accepted by many UK universities now.
TOEFL iBT (check uni policy) – accepted by some universities (but not a SELT for visa unless taken in a specific way).
Common minimum score: IELTS 6.0 overall with no band less than 5.5 (varies by course/university).
On average, it takes about 3 weeks after the biometrics appointment.
You can pay for Priority (5 working days) or Super Priority (1 working day), if available. Always check the current UKVI processing times.
UKVI and universities may conduct credibility interviews to confirm your course choice, finances, and future plans. Prepare to discuss your academic background, finances, and post-study intentions honestly, consistent with your CAS/SOP. (Universities outline what to expect.)

UK universities offer three main intakes every year for international students, including those from Nepal.
Biggest intake with the most course and university options. Ideal if you want scholarships and time to prepare. Apply 6–12 months in advance.
Good option if you miss the September intake. Fewer courses than September but still widely accepted. Apply by mid-year.
Offered by fewer universities with select programs (often business, IT or pathway courses). Good for early starters. Apply by late winter.
Tip: If you’re fully prepared, aim for the September intake. Otherwise, January and May are great alternatives depending on course availability and readiness.
Yes, students with a valid Student Visa:
Can work up to 20 hours/week during term time.
Can work full-time during holidays.
Cannot be self-employed or work in some restricted roles.
It varies a lot by course and university:
Undergraduate & Masters: approx. £15,000 – £30,000+ per year
Ranking, course type, and university location impact fees heavily.
Scholarships may reduce costs, so always apply early.
| UK City/Region | Estimated Monthly Cost (GBP) |
|---|---|
| London | £1,300 – £1,600 |
| Birmingham / Manchester | £1,000 – £1,200 |
| Edinburgh / Glasgow | £900 – £1,200 |
| Other cities & towns | £800 – £1,000 |
(Students can save by sharing accommodation, cooking at home, and choosing areas outside London.)
Some common causes:
Insufficient or unverifiable financial evidence
Funds not held for 28 days
Low or invalid English score (e.g., non-UKVI test)
Weak academic or study plan in the credibility interview or SOP
Falsified or incomplete documents
